CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR NEW PIECE OF GNRTN JEWELRY!
We pride ourselves on bringing you timeless collections of jewelry created through collaboration with designers and artisan jewelers from around the globe.

All of our jewelry is manufactured using the highest standards of quality but even the finest sterling silver can diminish in quality if not cared for properly. In order to keep your silver looking as perfect as they day you bought it, you need to be aware of how to wear it, how to clean it and how to store it.

WHAT IS 925 STERLING SILVER?
In order to improve the natural, soft and malleable state of pure silver, it is often combined with other metals to product a more durable piece of jewelry.

Sterling silver consists of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper. Generations of experimentation by silversmiths have proven copper to be the best metal to pair with silver as it improves the durability of the silver without effecting is natural coloring.

These trace amounts of copper have little to no effect on the value of the piece. The price is generally reflective of the labor involved in crafting each individual piece.

QUALITY STAMPS
All of GNRTNs pieces are stamped with a quality mark to indicate contents of the precious metal present in the jewelry. These stamps are generally found on the inside of the piece, on tags or clasps. Our quality stamps are generally:

  • sterling
  • sterling silver
  • ster
  • 0.925

WHAT CAUSES TARNISHING?
Tarnishing or oxidation is a result of oxygen or sulfur coming into contact with sterling silver. Tarnished silver is duller and sometimes a dark color. All GNRTN Jewelry is crafted using high-quality 925 Sterling Silver.

STORING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELRY
Oxygen and ambient moisture will generally lead to tarnishing your Sterling Silver Jewelry. As a result, it's important to properly store your pieces to help minimize the oxidation process. Here are a few storage tips:
  • Store in an area with low humidity (no bathroom storage).
  • Store each piece in an airtight (Ziploc) bag.
  • Place a packet of silica, anti-tarnish strips or piece of chalk in the storage bag.
  • Keep clasps/closures unhooked to avoid moisture buildup.

WEARING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELRY
Believe it or not, you can avoid tarnish by wearing your jewelry more regularly! The natural oils excepted by your skin will help to protect and clean the silver. Keep in mind that there a few activities you should avoid when wearing your jewelry. Be sure to remove your Sterling Silver jewelry before:
  •  Working Out
  •  Swimming
  •  Showering
  •  Using a hot tub
  •  Cleaning
  •  Sunbathing
  •  Applying Hairspray or Hair Products
  •  Putting on Lotion and Makeup
  •  Applying perfume or Cologne

We like to leave our silver jewelry as the last thing put on before leaving the house, and the first thing we take off when returning home. This is purely a preventive measure to help minimize its contact with perfumes, lotions, and other chemicals.

CLEANING YOUR STERLING SILVER JEWELRY
All sterling silver will eventually require some some cleaning. Polishing your silver is the best way to keep it clean. Be sure to do the following:

  • Always remove jewelry before showering or cleaning.
  • To prevent scratches, use only a silver polishing cloth to remove oxidation from your jewelry. Be sure to use fresh parts of the cloth as the dirt and grit left on the behind from a previous use can leave scratches. Don't press too hard, use light pressure and allow the cloth to work out the oxidation.
  • Wash off all cleaning agents. If you do not, a film can form and become a magnet for dirt, dust and other contaminants.
  • A jewelry store is the best place to look for the appropriate cleaning agent. Remember to always read the instructions before you attempt cleaning.
  • If you’d prefer the use of softer chemicals or don't have access to a jewelry store, you can wash your silver jewelry (without gemstones or pearls) in warm water using a few drops of mild dishwashing liquid. Submerge the piece in the water and gently wash it with your hands. A cotton swab is a great tool to get into small crevices. Thoroughly rinse and completely dry the sterling silver before storing. Remember, moisture is one of the factors that contribute to tarnishing!
  • Never clean your jewelry in bleach! Doing this will instantly start to degrade your jewelry. Bleach is an oxidizing agent that will react to the metal, causing it to become very brittle.
  • If the jewelry contains any gemstones or pearls, do not submerge the entire piece into water. Instead, use a cotton bud with mild dishwashing liquid to wash only the silver.
  • Never use toothpaste or other abrasives to clean metal or stones.
  • If this steps do not remove the tarnish on the sterling silver, it may require a visit to a professional jeweler who will either clean the sterling silver with an ultrasonic cleaner, or buff it with stages of abrasive paper.
